Corn on the husk, hearts brimming with love.
A landless people for justice went to war
never lazy are they, it's clearer still,
to take up handles of sickle and hoe,
so their plots can feed themselves and Brazil.
At their sacrifice beneath black plastic
the enemy scoffed: but still the people crossed
smashing fences offensive to their philosophy:
for whoever plants love there'll be peace and harmony.
Raising the voice of Agrarian Reform,
for the struggle does not weaken
when the ground is taken,
making schools, bringing comrades together,
creating a co-operative for production to grow.
1 Editor's note: Floriô: country-like or caipira way of saying
blossoming, flowering. The caipira is one who lives in the rural areas and who
has a peculiar way of talking as the result of a predominantly oral culture and
the permanence of archaisms.
